'Katjarra Country'
   Exhibition 2008

A few years ago we camped in the Carnarvon Ranges,
North of Wiluna near the Little Sandy Desert.
It was winter with a bitterly cold East wind every day
and there had been little rain in the previous year.

Peter Muir’s book “Sand Soaks and Desert Oaks”, written
as a result of his expeditions for the APB as Dogger
from 1965 to 1965, was an excellent guide to help us
explore the area. (He also wrote “Blue Peaks and
Red Ridges” which concentrates on the Carnarvon Ranges)

The spring we camped near was called “Virgin Springs” by
early white settlers, but is referred to as Katjarra Spring
by Peter Muir. I decided to call the exhibition
“Katjarra Country” as a mark of respect for the aboriginals traditionally occupying the area.

While in the Carnarvon Ranges, I sketched and painted
watercolours. The rocks, trees and distant salt lakes
gave an overwhelming sense of space and timelessness.

The area has some exceptional aboriginal rock art
and I was very mindful to not include any of these
images in my paintings.

The Carnarvon Ranges are close to the Canning Stock Route
and there are an increasing number of tourists
visiting the region. Fortunately there is an Aboriginal Group
which is starting to take ownership of the Ranges,
to control the impact of tourism.

The Ranges are near the Little Sandy Desert with
terrain very similar to that of the station I lived on
as a child, north of Meekatharra.

In a sense it was a “Coming Home”.
